Quite possibly the largest single day garage sale in San Francisco, the Bernal Hillwide is a neighborhood tradition.
Each year on the second Saturday of August, the Hill comes alive with neighbors and friends swapping goodies, discovering treasures, and generally unloading a bunch of stuff from their houses. Usually there are well over 100 houses having a garage sale at the same time, and you’ll often find vendors setting up on the sidewalks on and around Cortland (the legality of such things is questionable).
It’s one-part scavenger hunt and one-part party. Neighbors compete to have the most exciting, outrageous, or generally fun sale. In 2016, Bernal resident and local celebrity, Emperor Norton, judged the “Best of Bernal” competition. [add photos]
The event is a fundraiser for the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center. Residents donate a few bucks to register their sale on the Hillwide map.
